What To Talk About On Dates & What To Avoid

February 26, 2018

Let’s be realistic about dating conversation. There’s no perfect conversation when getting to know one another. We believe the magic happens on every journey. The little pauses, the nervous laughter and a mutual chat momentum that ultimately helps both of you find relaxation in each other’s company.

So what do we talk about on dates? If you really explore the issue, the question pinpoints to your date’s identity. Who are they? What has transpired since their days of single hood to the day you meet them? The questions will systematically align to the general rule of the 5 W’s and 1 H. Who? What? Where? When? Why? How?

Start out with a list.
Relax. You don’t have to glue your eyeballs to paper in order to make the date a success. Just the act of listing down those need-to-know questions already imprints a faint memory in your mind. Even keywords will do. Career? Pets? Travel experiences? There’s no need to strictly follow the list in sequence too. Write down the first things that pop into your mind.
Here are some chatter-starters to give you a boost.
Remember, you are being yourself. You aren’t going to be seated before an interview panel where a more professional persona is expected. Loosen up, be yourself. Your date wants to know all about you too! When at the date venue… “What kind of work do you do? What do you do during the weekends? Do you like outdoor or indoor activities? If so, what kind? Do you come from a big family? Just skim the surface of these questions. When one is asked about their line of work, passions or love for their family, they tend to light up in a way that brings their best face forward. And therein, my dear folks, is a start to a legitimate conversation between two parties.
Balance is key.
Keep in mind that sincerity is a two-way street, unlike a certain street where a big yellow bird dominates the show. Imagine how a successful date would go, and picture the setting, all warm hues and glorious; the conversation pace picks up at the same time as your heartbeats. Conversation splits both ways, so brave it up and share a dessert too. Fork your way through a slice of sinful chocolatey cake. Enjoy the rush from the sugary treat, and that high from your first date.
Throughout the date, remember to “pay it forward”. Give an apt compliment to a herculean date, or simply tell them they look nice. Karma is an omniscient being, and paying it forward has its merits. There’s no discounting a smile when making a solid first impression. Be it a nervous grin or a million wattage smile, beam your way forward and see if the pace of your date doesn’t develop into a full gallop!
